Debunking “Jack of All Trades”

Growing up, being a jack of all trades feels so much like a sin. It’s like having this curiosity inside of you and actually learning across things seem so much like a wrong thing to do.

So they say, “jack of all trades, master of none”.

Grateful for books, internet and its information (pros and cons though), I now have the access to learn and see the patterns from world leaders.

World geniuses, they say, have this ability to combine knowledge across discipline to make something extraordinary out of it. Steve Jobs excel both in design and technology, and a few other things I might not be aware of. Not to mention, Elon Musk and his head-turning companies — aerospace, transportation, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, solar power, and a few others. Sure thing, he has an array of knowledge in those fields. That aside, he releases an EDM track in his spare time!

Knowing how the world, knowledge, and therefore opportunities grows exponentially, it is important for us to position ourselves right. How do you differentiate yourself from the rest of the population? How are you able to pop out a color only you can pop?

Have we been doing it all wrong? So, is being a jack of all trades a wrong thing?

Yes and no.

Well, being all touchy-touchy in many aspects won’t bring you any benefits, unless you find a way to constellate it all together. For you to be able to constellate it all together, you gotta have a certain level of understanding. You just can’t learn it for a week and expect you to make something good out of it.

The key is for you to have a deep understanding of several subjects and construct it into something only you can construct. For example, back in the days there are a lot of computer experts. But what set Steve Jobs apart is his understanding of computer and design, also his ability to comine the two together.

I used to kill my curiosity, for the sake of being a specialist in one thing. I guess now I shall constellate everything together and see where it will lead me.
